This summer, the de Nicola Center convened its annual Notre Dame Vita Institute, introducing a specialized format tailored specifically for professionals working at the intersection of law and public policy.

Grounded firmly in the Catholic tradition, this intensive intellectual formation program brought together leading scholars with professionals in law and public policy to delve deeply into the legal, medical, bioethical, and policy questions that are essential to building a culture of life in a post–Dobbs era. By shifting to an intimate seminar setting, this year’s institute provided a rigorous space for scholarly exchange, aiming to deepen participants’ professional expertise and better equip them to defend the dignity of the unborn, their mothers, and their families. 

“For seventeen years, the Vita Institute has been the preeminent training program for leaders in the national and international pro-life movement,” observed Jennifer Newsome Martin, director of the de Nicola Center. “This year’s special focus on legal and policy questions allowed participants—each experts in their own field—to dive even more deeply, and in a sustained way, into these issues. These men and women are often at the very forefront of policy questions that ensure the equal dignity of mothers and their children; granting them an intellectual respite from their demanding schedules to study these issues in a focused, scholarly environment helped enrich and fortify the collective resources dedicated to this vital work.”

The condensed curriculum focused on the complex medical and constitutional realities surrounding pressing questions at the beginning of life, while the smaller cohort size enhanced the collaborative dimensions of the institute. Renowned medical experts and legal scholars delivered high-level presentations examining the medical claims surrounding childbirth and abortion, interstate legal questions, and recent study data regarding chemical abortion pills. Drawing upon their direct legal experience and expertise, the participants analyzed unique challenges within their respective fields, shared practical insights, and explored policy frameworks aimed at protecting human life over the long term while ensuring robust, compassionate support structures for vulnerable families.

This integration of theory and practice resonated deeply with attendees. “Every minute of every session was well-spent,” noted one participant. “It felt like several crash courses, spanning the medical-technical side, the theoretical side, and the on-the-ground legal side. For litigators who are often scrambling from case to case, the Vita Institute allowed us to return to a place of deep learning and come to the table with creative insights of our own. This was one of the most valuable conferences a professional can attend.”

Ultimately, the seminar format extended the reach of the Vita Institute and provided a space where solid theoretical grounding was matched with actionable information. By elevating the dialogue through scholarly rigor and an unwavering commitment to human dignity, the Notre Dame Vita Institute reaffirmed its role not merely as an intellectual formation program, but as a premier forum for preparing individuals to be even more effective in their work on behalf of the unborn and their mothers.
