Maritain Fellows Lecture: Martin Hähnel on"The Intellectual Legacy of Robert Spaemann"

-

Location: 104 Bond Hall

Join the Maritain Fellows for a its final invited lecture of the academic year. Prof. Martin Hähnel (Philosophy, University of Bremen), will present on, "The Intellectual Legacy of Robert Spaemann," reflecting in part on his personal acquaintance with the eminent German ethicist.

Abstract by Prof. Hähnel: Robert Spaemann was undoubtedly one of the most influential and well-known German-speaking thinkers of recent decades. His work is multifaceted, largely essayistic, controversial, and often shaped by personal experiences and beliefs. This makes it all the more difficult to identify his philosophical legacy, especially since the further reception of his thinking, both in the context of analytical philosophy and continental philosophy, has so far been largely absent. In my lecture, I will attempt to show what the actual legacy of his philosophy might be and why this legacy remains bound to certain assumptions that cannot be shared by everyone. Although it can be said that Spaemann's concept of personhood marks the zenith of his philosophy, not much can be deduced from this if one does not know why he focused his late thinking on it.
