Culture of Life

The Notre Dame Center for Ethics and Culture invited all to join the second annual conference - three days dedicated to the examination of the possibilities for building a genuine culture of life in our current social context. The responsibility to build a culture hospitable to life and committed to human flourishing belongs to Catholics and non-Catholics alike. The overarching goal of the conference was to bring scholars and students together to articulate the hopeful moral vision expressed in Pope John Paul II's encyclicals, Veritatis Splendor, Evangelium Vitae, and Centesimus Annus.

Specific topics addressed included:

  • The relationship between contemporary institutions and practices within medicine, education, politics, commerce, the family, the arts, and the natural sciences and regard for the value and dignity of life
  • The influence of technology on human flourishing.
  • The proper conception of human dignity and human rights.
  • The importance of diversity in promoting human flourishing.
  • The historical roots of our present situation and historical resources for change.
  • The prospects for and resources of developing nations.
  • Responsibilities to the poor and oppressed.
  • Possibilities for peace and reconciliation in war-torn areas.
  • The philosophical foundations of conceptions of human flourishing.

The conference began the evening of Thursday, November 29, and ended on Saturday evening with a mass at the Basilica and a banquet at the conference center. Registration began at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday in the lobby of the Center for Continuing Education.
