This public lecture series and dinner is offered in honor of the generosity of the Arthur J. Schmitt Foundation to the University of Notre Dame. These semi-annual lectures, which are open to the public, bring distinguished speakers from around the world and provide occasions at which the Schmitt Fellows, graduate students in the Colleges of Science and Engineering, join other members of the Notre Dame community to reflect on the ethical, political, and religious dimensions of the studies in which they are engaged.

The Fall 2016 Schmitt Lecture will be presented by Gladden J. Pappin, Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science and Political Theory Fellow in the Center for Ethics and Culture. The title of his talk is "The New Utopianism and the Revenge of Natural Limits." Professor Pappin will compare the aims of twentieth-century utopian regimes with the current aims of technological utopianism, including communications technology and bioengineering, concluding with a reflection on the limits of these efforts.
