
Gilbert Meilaender
Richard & Phyllis Duesenberg Professor of Christian Ethics
Valparaiso University
Prior to his appointment at Valparaiso University in 1996, Meilaender
taught at the University of Virginia and at Oberlin college. He served
as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Religious Ethics, as
an Associate Editor for Religious Studies Review, on the Editorial
Board of the Annual of the Society of Religious Ethics, on the
Editorial Board of Dialog, and on the Editorial Advisory Board
of First Things. His published work falls generally into the
area of religious ethics, though he also has a special interest in bioethics
and is a Fellow of the Hastings Center. His recent books include Working:
Its Meaning and Its Limits (University of Notre Dame Press, 2000),
Love Taking Shape: Sermons on the Christian Life (Eerdmans, 2002),
and The Taste for the Other: The Social and Ethical Thought of C.S.
Lewis (reprint by Regent College, 2003). He is a member of
the President's Council on Bioethics.
Professor Meilaender was an invited speaker for our "Culture of Death," "Culture of Life," "From Death to Life," and "Formation and Renewal" conferences. In April 2002, he delivered our Arthur J. Schmitt lecture, which he titled "Genes as Resources." A regular participant in our annual Medical Ethics Conference, he he delivered the J. Philip Clarke Family Lecture on Medical Ethics in 1999.
